A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
“My son Levi was born 8/17/14 at 28 weeks. He weighed 2 lbs 14.9 oz. He is such a sweet baby and has been fighting from the beginning. He is my super hero.

When my son was born I felt an extreme disconnect; that wasn’t my son. My son was suppose to be healthy and inside me. Instead I was looking at this foreign being with tubes coming from every part of him. I was mad, confused, and numb. It’s okay to be mad. This isn’t fair. You didn’t get the typical labor experience. But I can promise any NICU family this - As you watch your baby grow and grow there is no way anyway can deny that there is a God. You see your baby struggle and conquer and he/she builds you. Your baby will make you wanna be strong. You will get through this. And you will be a stronger person because of it.”

A Note From Christina:

“Baby Levi's photo shoot went really well! The parents had a really good idea of what they wanted, and Levi was such a champ! It took about an hour and 15 minutes to take all the pictures that I wanted and that the parents wanted but I am very happy with the results.  I had such a tough time picking my favorite 5 for the sneak peaks.”

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
“Aubrey Elise was born on March 11, 2014, 7lbs but while she was in the NICU she lost weight. She had a hard time holding down her milk and not having a bowel movement.

The nurses and doctors in the NICU at Scott & White Hospital made us feel so comfortable living our daughter in their care. It was so hard not having her with us 24 hours a day but they let us keep our hospital room at Scott & white until she went home.”

A Note From Christina:
"Baby Aubrey's photoshoot went really well.  It was kind of cold out today when I took these, so the photoshoot ended early because Aubrey started shaking she was cold. It lasted 30 minutes, but ended with some amazing pictures."

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
“Chauncey Williams was born on November 14, at 25 weeks old. He was 1 lb, 13 ounces and 14 inches long. He is struggling with underdeveloped lungs, but otherwise is stable and progressing. He remarkably was born via en caul C section, where he was delivered still in the amniotic sac. Sadly, we have no pictures!! :(

This is our second time in the NICU, and oddly enough, it is a less stressful experience, because we understand a lot more about the process. We have been blessed with fighters; both our boys are feisty and have been born with minimal issues, really just dealing with what comes with prematurity. I'm able to ask the right questions, understand more in depth what is happening, and be more involved in the process. However, it is very difficult being out of work way earlier than anticipated, having to pump regularly and not bond over nursing for up to 2 months, not hold or really touch my son because he is so small, and now that I have a toddler, trying to juggle motherhood.

I guess my advice would be to try and anticipate anything when you first get pregnant, sign up for short term disability at work/privately, save a small "pregnancy" fund, that is at least a few paychecks, and try to pay monthly bills a little in advance. That way, if a preterm labor happens, you don't have the added stress of unpaid bills. Both times we had no money saved and no short-term disability, and it has placed an extreme stress on our lives, needing assistance from friends and family to survive. I also encourage you to spend every moment with your child, anything the nurses do that isn't blood work or something, you are allowed to do. Changing diapers, washing, holding the bottle for feeds, and so on, are always things you can do instead of watching them do it. Never pass up a chance for bonding with your baby! Also don't be afraid to question or clarify something. Don't take for granted that your child needs supplemental formula if you are producing well, or extra antibiotics, or so on, ask the doctor questions to be fully educated on any decision they make about your child.”

A Note From Cassandra:

“The Williams family is nothing short of amazing;  I was able to meet up with them at NICU where Chauncey was up to 6lb 4oz and on open air as he prepared to go home.  As Rachel was going over his daily and overnight info with the nurse they were discussing going home soon, which was probably exciting news for Mom and Dad but also Big (2 year old) Brother, Carmelo (who while a trooper was a two year old confined in NICUs close family quarters).  Mom and Dad were tag teaming an active Two Year Old, Checking leads on Chauncey, and speaking with rounds doc with such ease that when they get home it should look like a piece of cake (I guess you become a PRO when Dad is a Cancer survivor and Big Brother was also a Preemie).”

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
“Noah was born on Dec 27th  at 24 weeks gestation by emergency c - section weighing 1 lb 14oz and 13 in long. He spent 136 days in the NICU and finally came home Mothers day weekend!

The NICU was one of the most overwhelming places I have ever entered. I felt so helpless standing there staring at my innocent little boy fighting for his life. Each day that passed he grew stronger, gaining ounces were a cause for celebration but there were the set backs too. Noah underwent surgery for in lingual hernia, pyloric stenosis and ROP, after these he was finally discharged mothers day weekend, the struggles since discharge have at time been overwhelming but I'm so happy my little fighter is home!”

A Note From Daneen:

“After bouts of sickness (my kids, Cristina's kids, etc) we finally had our Preemie Prints Session with Noah.  Noah came to the studio with his mom, Cristina on Feb. 5th for a NICU Grad Session.  He is 13 months and I believe she said 9 months adjusted.  Noah is exactly what his mom described when she said he was "a little fighter".  This is why he is a survivor <3.  Noah knows exactly what he wants and he wanted nothing to do with getting his photos taken.  Mom was able to get a few smiles but he knew exactly where I was and decided to avoid me at all costs.  He has the most beautiful blue eyes and he loves his momma dearly!  He loved to roll around the studio and boy was he quick.  He also loved to make noise!  I can't believe what a little miracle he was!  Amazing to see his progress and I have no doubt that he will continue to amaze us all!”
