A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM

“Landon made his entrance into this world on Sept. 10, 2014, at 6:21pm, weighing in 6 lbs. 3 oz., 19 inches long. He was born 5 weeks early due to me having high blood pressure.

I went in for a consultation with the diabetes consult since I had gestational diabetes. They admitted me to the labor and delivery unit that day, since my blood pressure had been high for a couple days. Being told I was going to have the baby that day was the scariest and happiest feeling I have ever felt. I started crying right away when the doctor told me I was having my baby that day. I wasn't ready yet, is what I kept saying. I had a few complications during my labor and ended up having to get a C-section. After being in labor for 24 hours, I finally got to see my baby boy. I didn't get to hold him right away since he was immediately brought to the NICU. He had jaundice and eating issues while there which is why we couldn't take him home. The jaundice only lasted a few days and seeing him under the blue light with his little sunglasses they put over his eyes was heartbreaking. His eating was the part that was frustrating the most. He would eat but was just a little pokey and they wanted him to finish it all within 20-30 minutes. It was frustrating because we just wanted to bring him home already. We knew he was eating the amount he was supposed to just not in the time frame they wanted. It was so hard seeing your baby spend the first days of his life around unfamiliar voices and people. I went up there 3 times a day to feed him and hold him so he knew that I was always going to be there and was never alone. The last night he was there we had to board in and it was kind of scary knowing I wasn't going to have the professional help at home in case I didn't know what to do. I made sure to ask a lot of questions and was doing everything right. The next morning when we were loading in the car was bittersweet. I was so happy to be taking our son home and spending quality time with him in our own environment. Overall, I loved my time in the hospital and the doctors and nurses that took care of my son. I will never forget the experience and am so thankful for everything!
My baby boy will turn 1 soon and is a smart, healthy, and independent little boy who loves Micky Mouse Clubhouse. He also just started walking this week. I'm so happy to be his Mommy and we love him to pieces!"

“Check out this sweet boy!  Landon was born 5 weeks premature and spent 2 weeks in the NICU with some jaundice and eating issues.  But he is now a healthy, happy, sweet boy who has his first birthday this month.  Landon was so happy during our photo shoot and was up for just about anything.  It was so much fun being a part of such a special milestone in his life.  A true blessing that comes from these photo shoots is meeting new families and it was such a joy to meet Landon and his sweet Momma, Shannon.”

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM

“My son, Grayson, was born September 27, 2014 at 31 weeks and 3 days. He was a healthy 4 pounds and came out screaming! He has three older brothers (Nick - almost 14 years old, Josh - almost 12 years old, and Noah - 2.5 years old).

Grayson spent a total of 46 days in the NICU and came home on an apnea monitor. He was a fighter from the beginning always pulling off his CPAP and pulling out his feeding tube. There were many ups and downs during his NICU journey including staph infections in both eyes (which required us to gown up before being able to hold him. Grayson tried to tell the nurses and doctors that he was ready to go home after about 30 days, but then he would drop his heart rate while eating. This led to the apnea monitor for about 6 weeks after his discharge. As much as I DID NOT want to take him home on a monitor, it definitely let us get some sleep those first few nights! I cried the entire wheelchair ride from the NICU to the hospital exit -- because I was so happy that he was finally coming home!”

"I had such a wonderful experience meeting this sweet family. I was so fortunate and honored to capture these images that they will cherish for a long time. Grayson is a handsome happy little 9 month old who captured my heart as soon as I saw him. His smile is so captivating, you would never know he had spent over 2 months in the NICU at birth. Thank you Preemie Prints for bringing this family into my life, I will always have a spot for little Grayson in my heart."

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM

“We spent 7 weeks visiting our twin boys in the NICU at College Station Medical Center. With each and every visit we were welcomed by very caring staff that knew all about Preemie Prints and what they had to offer. If it was not for all the LOVE from the NICU staff and Preemie Prints, we definitely would not have had such a positive NICU experience.

Our entire pregnancy, my husband and I were aware of our very high likelihood of becoming a NICU parent. At just 11 weeks gestation we were sent to Houston to be told that there was less than a 1% chance that even one of our babies would survive, much less two. Houston fetal specialists would tell us, "If you make it to 24 weeks with two live babies we will be impressed." One of our twins had a velamentous cord attachment and was not getting "adequate" nutrients for survival. They were then at risk to one another because they were monochorionic (they share a placenta and are only separated by a very thin membrane). We choose to let nature takes its course and form and HUGE prayer team to pray like crazy.

Long story short, we now have two healthy identical twin boys! Not to say that we did not experience one hell of a roller coaster ride along the way both physically and emotionally, but we all survived the pregnancy. We made it to 31 weeks! The boys weighed in at 3.10 lbs and 2.1 lbs (baby with velamentous). We barely got to glance at them before they were rushed to the NICU and hooked up to all kinds of cords and monitors. This is all we knew for the next 4-5 weeks. We did not know what they looked like without all of their "decorations" if you will. As they grew stronger and we were allowed to hold, feed, and fully experience our boys, the LOVE that was showered upon us from others that had also experienced NICU babies was absolutely vital to our positive outlook. Without Preemie Prints, I think both my husband and I would have been lost in the mindset of "what if we never leave here." Hearing others’ experiences with prayers and encouragement from complete strangers we were able to be the positive mindset of "we have made it this far, we WILL go home as a happy family of FOUR!"

We welcomed home Tucker at 6 weeks and Tavin (our wee one) just one week later. We could not have asked for better LOVE and support throughout our NICU experience! Thank You Preemie Prints for all that you do!
