A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
"Samuel Rivers was born at 27 weeks 3 days weighing 2 lbs 2 oz due to severe preeclampsia. He was in the hospital for 145 days. He overcame a bowel perforation at one week, he had an ostomy bag for 2 months, a second surgery to close it back up, rhinovirus, chronic lung disease and much more in the NICU. Now after only 3 months our of the NICU, we had to go back for a hernia surgery. The doctors and nurses are amazing people; we keep them in our prayers."

A note from Judith-
"I had a wonderful time with this terrific family, Sammy was very curious and a total delight!  I brought my 3 kiddo's to the shoot and I introduced them to my son who is now 13 and very active, but was once in the NICU on oxygen, so that was kind of cool for both of us.  Overall the shoot went great, I had a great time with them and they are a lovely family! :)"

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
"I had twin boys born June 29, 2013 at 26 weeks 6 days. Their names are Warren Andrew and Dean Michael. They were both born weighing 2 lbs 5 oz. I had numerous pregnancy complications and a total of just over 7 weeks of hospitalized bed rest to help these little ones get closer to their due date. We were told 4 separate times during the pregnancy they would never survive. And when I went into labor at 21 weeks, they prepared us for the worst. (our daughter was born at 21 weeks the year before). Thankfully, they were wrong, and our boys hung in there another few weeks to get closer to my 3rd trimester! An emergency c-section was performed as contractions hit every 2 minutes and I was dilated 5cm. It was the most amazing thing to hear my babies cry as they were born 1 minute apart.

We spent a total of 87 long days in the NICU. Our journey was a little different than most in that I knew from week 8 on that I would have preemies. The doctor at that time told me to just hang on to 28 weeks. Well, I didn't quite get that far, but our twins have done great anyway. Knowing in advance they would be very early helped me to sort through the emotions of that over a longer period of time. There were definitely some scary moments in the NICU, don't get me wrong, but I was just so grateful they made it! That they weren't fighting against my body anymore, that they could be well cared for, and that God was in control. I had the unique opportunity to watch them develop outside the womb, to learn things about your child no one else could possibly know with a term baby. To celebrate milestones those outside the NICU know nothing about...learning to breath, learning to suck on a paci, learning to eat, keeping the heart rate up, keeping the temperature up. So many little reasons to celebrate each day. I do remember the moments of terror when the phone rings and shows the NICU number, when multiple x-rays are done to figure out why your child isn't digesting anything, to see their weights drop so low, to hear those monitors going off - signaling that, yet again, he is not ready for lower oxygen or lower settings. Up and down always. But, they really do get it. We are living proof that medical odds are not always truth. As our boys beat the odds during every conceivable pregnancy complication, extremely early birth, and are now home and doing well. My blog meghansavant.blogspot.com shares all the details of our journey through infertility, loss, pregnancy, and NICU trials"

"I got lost on my way to the park and ended up just parking the first place I found that I could. Andrew walked over to me from where he and Meghan were waiting for me, to help me unload. They were so nice and things went so smoothly. Warren and Dean are so blessed to have the most caring parents ever, whose love for each other and their little sweet family can been seen just by looking at them. I am so glad that I got to meet them and provide them with their boys first bithday pictures."

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
"We are a very unique story in that we always knew we'd be spending time in the NICU, ever since I was 7 weeks pregnant. My twins are monoamniotic twins which means they shared the same amniotic sac. Since there was nothing separating my twins, their umbilical cords intertwined and tangled. I checked into the hospital at 24 weeks on March 22 and spent over 5 weeks being monitored 24/7 in case the twins had to be delivered via emergency c-section due to the cords being tangled. I was rushed to the operating room 3 times because Baby A was showing signs of destress, but she recovered each time. My membranes ruptured at 26 weeks and later resealed. In the end, I went into preterm labor at 29 weeks and started dilating, warranting and emergent c-section. Our girls had some bumps the first week. Mia had some heart arrhythmias, a minor brain bleed and spent time on the oscillating ventilator. Everly just decided to stop breathing on day 2. However, things quickly turned around and now my girls are doing amazing. Everly is off all breathing assistance and Mia is just on very minimal oxygen via nasal cannula. They just have to grow and learn to eat now!"

"These precious girls are so blessed to be born to parents who clearly love them deeply. Born out of such a unique situation these two will share such a special bond forever. Each little one is so precious and I love the hint of all the red hair to come. I enjoyed meeting them and their parents. It was a joy to capture their journey and I can't wait to see how they grow."

OUR NICU JOURNEY | FROM MOM

"Graham Honor was born on February 5th at 12:04 pm. I was 25 weeks pregnant at the time. He was 1 lb. 7 oz. Even though we were not prepared for his early birth, we have been so blessed by Graham's entrance into this world! He keeps us entertained and smiling every day!

Our NICU journey was a difficult, but encouraging one. We has an amazing primary nurse in the NICU who acted as Graham's second momma while we couldn't be there. When Graham was born we weren't prepared to bring our baby into the world, but we learned so much about the power of prayer and the strength of our little one. He went through some rough times in the NICU. He got sick about a month after his birth. The hospital stopped all feedings and put him on two different antibiotics. During this time we saw Graham persevere and it inspired us to become stronger parents as well as humbled us. Graham came home with us after 82 days in the NICU. We have so enjoyed having with us! He is still on oxygen and a monitor, but getting stronger every day! Even though all the Dr. appointments can seem overwhelming at times it is all worth it! He is our little miracle baby and we wouldn't have it any other way.."

A note from Jessica:
"The photo shoot with the Robison Family went great. We had lots of smiles and giggles from the parents, their six year old son, and even baby Graham gave a few smiles/smirks too!  I enjoyed hearing their journey with their new addition, Graham, and other stories about their family. Those are two lucky children to have such loving, caring, and patient parents!  I wish you the best and will always keep your family in my prayers."

OUR NICU JOURNEY | FROM MOM

Our NICU journey began when our son, Sean, arrived at 37 weeks. What started out as a routine visit to our doctor's office quickly turned into an emergency Cesearean due to a placental abruption. Sean's heart rate was dropping quickly due to the tear, and I was bleeding internally. Up until the time they started cutting we still didn't know if I would be under general anesthesia or local, meaning my husband could be in the room. Thankfully my tests came back in the normal range and I was put under local anesthesia. As soon as Sean was delivered the nurses and doctors began working on him. Original APGAR score was a 1; two tests later we were up to a 9. My husband went with Sean to the NICU while I went to recovery. I wasn't able to visit Sean in the NICU until the next evening once I was stable. My husband visited the NICU often, receiving updates from staff and taking photos/videos to share. The word "amazing" doesn't fully describe the NICU staff but it's all I can come up with at the moment. Without the hard work and persistence of the doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals at our hospital, I think we would have had a very different outcome. To other NICU families, remember that you are not alone. There are others who share the same shock, pain and fear that you are feeling right now. Remember to have faith and hold on to all of the precious moments to come."

I would love to give back to families that have a lot on their plate with a child in the NICU, I understand that struggle as my son was in the Rose Hospital NICU when he was born. Every family should have the opportunity at wonderful newborn photography."
