A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
“We got the official diagnosis that Tripp had Myelomeningocele Spina Bifida, a Chiari malformation, and club feet when I was
26 weeks along. On top of that, he wouldn't move out of breech position. I was
scheduled for a C-section when I was 39 weeks along. Besides from the health
issues we knew of before hand, he was a healthy baby boy weighing in at 7lbs
9ozs and measuring 17.5 inches long. He was taken to the NICU at Children's
hospital in Minneapolis to prep him for surgery and watch him for breathing
issues. The next day he had surgery to repair the sac on his back. He spent the
next few nights in the NICU being monitored and having tests run. Six days
after he was born, they moved him to the ICC (Infant care center) which is a
step down unit because he was going so great. Unfortunately, fluid was
collecting around his incision site and in his brain. He was moved back into
the NICU and awaited another surgery to put a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (or VP
shunt) in place. That surgery went great and he was monitored a couple of more
days in the NICU before we were discharged after a total of 15 days in there.
We had some pretty amazing nurses that really advocated for Tripp and made sure
that my husband and I knew what was going on and we were also being taken care
of. We have weekly appointments to check Tripp's progress, and are proud to
report that he is doing good.”

"This morning I had the pleasure of meeting the Buesgens' family and doing Tripp’s NICU graduate photo session. The shoot went
wonderfully. Mom had the house toasty warm and ready for baby to be comfortable
while having his pictures taken! Big sister was such a HAM! and was a joy to
work with as well! This family’s love and closeness was a delight!"

Preemie Prints is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization sharing hope with NICU families through a variety of support programs. One of those programs is the gift of NICU photography and preemie photography. NICU families from across the US can request a no-charge photography session by a Preemie Prints volunteer. The family request from can be found on the right side of our website. These sessions are free of charge and for any NICU family, regardless of time spent in the NICU. The NICU photo shoot can take place inside the NICU or after baby is discharged and at home until their 1st birthday. Facing time in a NICU with a premature or critically ill baby is an extremely difficult time for families. Preemie Prints has a mission to share hope by letting families know they are not alone. Preemie Prints currently has over 100 volunteers nationwide. We are always looking for more volunteers to share in our mission!
