A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM JACK'S FAMILY
I had just started my 3rd trimester when I was diagnosed with gestational hypertension. This was my first pregnancy so I felt a little nervous but i still went on with my day. On the 25th of September I was told to go to triage because I have protein in my urine and I was diagnosed with preeclampsia. I was nervous but I still felt okay until I was told that I'm not leaving until I gave birth. I was only 30 weeks 5 days..I still had the rest of my 3rd trimester to go! On the 28th of September I had an ultrasound and I was told that I am having my son that day via c section because he was not moving around as much. I felt like someone told me a loved one had died..I was so devastated and immediately felt guilt and fear. He came out an hour after he decision was made. Ever since his birthday he has been doing great! He is just under 3lbs (he was born at 2lbs 5oz) and he doesn't need much help breathing and he's been getting feeding cues. My whole life has changed and I cannot thank the nurses and doctors enough for taking care of him. He will be home in no time!

Jack's photo session was taken and donated by Preemie Prints volunteer photographer, Jennifer Sternal-Johnson.

A Note From Jen:
Jack is doing so well in the NICU! Hoping he's home with his family soon.

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MARILYN'S FAMILY
18 weeks into my pregnancy I was told my baby hadn't grown in 2 weeks, I was told by my care provider a DNC Would be our best interest, I didn't accept that. I switched care providers and began mild bed rest. At 27 weeks I was hospitalized to receive steroids and await my babies arrival. At 30 weeks exactly at 4:07 pm I gave birth to a 1lb 6oz micro preemie named Marilyn. She was one of the tiniest babies on the unit. When she was born she was given a 30% chance of survival with no major health issues. She was diagnosed with failure to thrive, IUGR & BPD. After 107 days between the level 3 NICU and the special care nursery we were finally able to go home.

Marilyn's photo session was taken and donated by Preemie Prints volunteer photographer, Jennifer Sternal-Johnson.

A Note From Jen:
Photos from Marilyn's first birthday! She sure has grown: from a 30 week, 1lb 6oz micropreemie to a happy one year old! So glad to see her thriving.

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM JAVEN'S FAMILY
Javen was born at 30 weeks on April 13, 2017 at Elmira, New York. He was only 1 lb and 8 oz. He was transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital after a week of being born as they found out that he has Coarctation of Aorta and might be needing a heart surgery when he grows big and strong. After being at the nicu for almost 3 months now, he just got out of the breathing tube 3 days ago as he was having problems with his breathing/lungs. Their next plan is to fix his heart whenever he gets comfortable breathing without his breathing tube. Three months is a long time here at nicu but I'm surrounded by good people, so thatmakes it easier.

Javen's photo session was taken and donated by Preemie Prints volunteer photographer, Jennifer Sternal-Johnson.

A Note From Jen:
Javen was born weighing 1 pound, 8 ounces--now he's getting so big! Hopeful for continued gains for him and his family.

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM KENZIE AND SAVANNAH'S FAMILY
Savannah Rose and Kenzie Hope were born February 10th, 2017, at 30 weeks and 3 days. At 16 weeks of pregnancy we were diagnosed with TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome). At 19 weeks my boyfriend and I traveled to Philadelphia Children's hospital where I had laser surgery to save their lives. It worked!!!! Both girls are currently at Strong Memorial and doing well. They are breathing on their own and doing great with feedings. We are extremely blessed!

Kenzie and Savannah's photo session was taken and donated by Preemie Prints volunteer photographer, Jennifer Sternal-Johnson.

A Note From Jen:
Kenzie and Savannah are identical twins who had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome in the womb and had corrective surgery at 19 weeks. They were born at 30 weeks and at 9 days old, were already off oxygen and doing great! Can't wait til they are home with Emily and David and their big siblings!

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM JEMMA'S FAMILY
Jemma was born at 30w5d weighing only 1lb 10oz. I was diagnosed with IUGR (intrauterine growth restriction) during pregnancy. The placenta didn't form well throughout and wasn't able to supply nutrients and blood well to the baby. We battled reversed and intermittent blood flow in the later weeks, but thankfully was caught early. The Dr admitted me to the hospital when I was 24w and gave steroids. I was monitored closely. We were able to detect small changes that allowed another round of steroids and then a successful c section. Jemma did not require breathing assistance. They did put an NG tube in for feeding. We fought hard with feeding. She battled reflux and constipation a lot, but the nurses and drs always worked diligently to give her the best care possible. She spent 66 days in the NICU. The team decided they would send her home because babies tend to do better at home once stable enough. Since being home, we were able to remove the NG tube a few weeks later. It's still been a struggle for feeds but now that she's 7 months old, she weighs 11lbs and actually gets hungry now!! It gets better. Don't be discouraged with milestones and expectations because these babies are fighters and will amaze you. They are on their own curve. It will get better, trust me.

Jemma's photo session was taken and donated by Preemie Prints volunteer photographer, Jennifer Sternal-Johnson.

A Note From Jen:
Jemma was the sweetest little model! We met at the beach and had a great session. Best wishes to her and her family!

A NICU STORY | THOUGHTS FROM MOM
"I was diagnosed with chorioamniotic separation at 18 weeks pregnant as well as cervical incompetence. I bled from 5 weeks until 24 weeks. The doctors never thought we'd make it to viability at 24 weeks. On June 30th at exactly 27weeks my water broke. I kept calm and we headed to the hospital. The amazing doctors were able to keep our guy inside me for an additional 3 weeks. I delivered a screaming 3 lbs 6oz baby boy at exactly 30 weeks."

 A note from Deanna:
I had a wonderful time volunteering for my first Preemie Prints shoot!  I loved watching the Choate family bond and how their baby boy, Chaos, responded to his parents.  What a special moment and I appreciate them letting me be a part of it!
